file type is not permitted

Recently updated to WordPress 4.9.9 or 5.0.1 and your CSV file imports for Store Locator Plus® stopped working? It is now fairly common to see a “file type is not permitted” error when uploading files. You can thank yet another “WordPress security feature” — also known as “backwards compatibility break”.  This “update” came with absolutely no warning to plugin developers.

WordPress 4.9.9 and 5.0.1 break Store Locator Plus® Imports and thousands of other plugins.

This does not affect our Store Locator Plus® SaaS users thanks to our fully managed software stack, so they can rest easy and continue to import locations.

WordPress Import Updates

We are still researching what is possible for workarounds to the File Type Is Not Permitted issue.  Unfortunately the lack of notification beforehand that a breaking change was coming leaves us scrambling to work a major software update into our already hectic schedule.

What we have learned thus far is that the previous settings allowing for any file type to be uploaded to the media manager is no longer allowed, including the location CSV files.

It is going to take us a while to figure out what WordPress did, come up with a patch, test the patch, and roll it out to the general public.

File Type Is Not Permitted – Quick Fix

An easy fix is to shift from self-managed WordPress plugins to our Store Locator Plus® managed location software service. We keep all the software updated and configured to maximize productivity and reduce your IT management overhead.
